PRIVATE TUITION

About Riviera Tuition

Riviera Tuition is based in Torquay and offers professional private tuition across Torbay, Teignbridge, Exeter and South Devon.

We're 5-star rated

Founded by Emma Walton in 2010, Riviera Tuition strives to provide parents and pupils with a personal tuition service that boosts confidence and achieves great academic results.

We are a team of over fifteen tutors, all of which are highly qualified, experienced and dynamic teachers, offering the best private tuition in Torbay. All of our tutors specialise in their degree subject; therefore we are able to offer one-to-one tuition from KS1 right up to A level in all subjects. Each and every one of our tutors is determined to provide every child with tuition that is personalised, focused and structured in order to help them achieve their full potential. We also pride ourselves on having a wealth of experience and knowledge in preparing pupils specifically for the 11+ (11plus) Entrance Examinations in Torbay. Accurate assessments of each child’s abilities underpins our success as tutors.

We look forward to hearing from you!

The History of Riviera Tuition

2011
Emma started tutoring

In 2011, Emma started tutoring in her little Renault Clio offering tuition at people’s homes all over Torbay, South Hams and Teignbridge. That little Renault Clio battled storms, trees blocked in country roads and potholes galore to venture to some of the most amazing places in Devon to teach a lesson!

2012
The team grows

Soon demand took over and she joined forces with a few other amazing tutors, who shared the same ethos and values that Emma did. Our tutor team grew and grew, some of our original tutors (our OTs!) are still working with us today!

2015
First tuition centre opened

We were a business operating from Emma’s dining room table but in 2015 that soon changed. We decided we wanted our very own tuition centre, where we could create a hub of learning.

In 2015, we opened our first tuition centre on The Terrace in Torquay. By this point, we had fifteen tutors on our tutor team and began running group lessons after school and one-to-one homeschooling lessons from our centre in the day.

2017
Working with local schools

In 2017, we began working with local schools and Torbay Council for those students who could not access mainstream schools. We recruited new teachers but also loved the challenge of utilising our skills to support those children with the most need.

2018
Alternative provision added

In 2018, we set up our Alternative Provision as there was a need for a stepping stone provision. Children, who cannot access mainstream education, could access quality teaching at home by qualified teachers but also had small, friendly classrooms that they could access with a tutor to help them back into a formal provision alongside peers in the future.

2019
We WIN Venus Business of the Year

In 2019, we won Venus Business of the Year Devon and Cornwall. A gruelling process where we got interviewed, observed and judged several times over several months but it was recognised that the work we did with young people on behalf of schools and on behalf of private parents was award-worthy!

2020
We win ANOTHER award

In early 2020, we won another award and got the chance to travel to Birmingham to collect it from Dragon’s Den star, Theo Paphitis. Then COVID hit!

During COVID
Zoom takes over

During COVID, we discovered just how flexible we are. We ran 11+ mocks on Zoom, we hand-delivered the papers all over Devon ourselves, we had 20 tutors working online with your pupils filling the gaps that schools just could not offer. We ended up working closely with schools and became key workers for the most vulnerable SEN children, that still needed face to face tuition.

After COVID
Overhaul of our services

After COVID, we knew that we were the best at offering personalised learning and that was something that we really excel in. We developed our Alternative Provision to support 11+ students and overhauled our 11+ and GCSE syllabuses to make sure that we could carry on that super-personalised and resource-packed approach that we all naturally threw ourselves into during COVID.

2022
Exam centre opened

We set up an exam centre offering Functional Skills and Level 2 and 3 Vocational Diplomas to young people, who cannot achieve qualifications in school. This gave young people a second chance to get qualifications that they could use as an entry to a college course.

2023
Waved goodbye to The Terrace

In 2023, we waved goodbye to The Terrace on Torquay Harbour and we said bonjour to our new home in Chelston. We are now based on Walnut Road in our cosy tuition centre with plenty of free parking right outside the door.

NOW
Full-time team and over 30 tutors

We started with humble beginnings: a one-woman show and her renault clio but now…we have a full-time office team and over 30 tutors working with us every week with our aim to provide the most friendly, personable and engaging tuition there is.

We have helped so many children since 2011 and we love being part of their success story. We hope to be part of your success story next!

Interested in how we can help your child? Let's get the ball rolling.

Based in Chelston, Torquay, we provide private tuition across Torbay including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.
